A new survey reveals that for many Americans, a home is more than just a place to live — its an extension of who they are.
In a poll of 2,000 U.S. homeowners conducted by Talker Research for outdoor remodeling company System Pavers, 78% of respondents said they view their homes as a reflection of themselves. That sentiment was strongest among millennials, with 88% agreeing.
Despite rising housing costs and changing market trends, homeowners remain highly connected to their spaces. More than a third (35%) said theres nothing about their home they would change, even if they had the opportunity.
The study also explored what elements homeowners prioritized when buying. Architectural style came out on top for 33% of respondents, followed closely by square footage (29%) and backyards (23%).
The significance of outdoor spaces stood out throughout the survey. Among those with outdoor features like porches or gardens, 60% said they spend as much time as possible in those areas. Millennials led the way again — 82% said they make the most of their outdoor time compared to just 56% of baby boomers.
“What we’re seeing, especially with millennial homeowners, is a focus on turning outdoor areas into amazing entertainment spaces,” said Cassi Hallam, chief marketing officer at System Pavers. “It’s more than just adding value to the house; it’s about creating a place where they can truly relax and enjoy time with friends and family. They’re prioritizing having a dedicated outdoor space that reflects personal style and makes everyday living feel a bit more special.”
In terms of preference, backyards were the most beloved outdoor feature (70%), followed closely by gardens (69%), front yards (61%), and decks (61%). Despite their preferences 87% of respondents agreed front yards or gardens are the “pride” of their home.
Respondents also expressed emotional attachment to their outdoor spaces, with 63% agreeing that no feeling compares to the first time they can enjoy their yard after a stretch of bad weather. Relaxation ranked as the top reason for using outdoor space (51%), followed by gardening (17%). Anecdotes from respondents included enjoying time outdoors with pets, watching grandchildren play, and soaking up pleasant weather from the porch.
“Getting outside with loved ones in a beautiful space sets the stage for making those special moments together,” Hallam said. “We love helping homeowners transform their backyards into places where life happens. Whether it’s a cozy covered patio for gatherings throughout the year, a fully equipped outdoor kitchen for easy entertaining, or low-maintenance paver and turf areas that allow time for more enjoyment and less work, our goal is to design spaces that bring people closer, and add real value to homes and lifestyles.”
