Liza Minnelli’s Pals Worry AI Song Is ‘Beneath Her’, Wonder Who Is ‘Advising’ Ailing Icon

EGOT-winning legend Liza Minnelli is defending her decision to use artificial intelligence for her new single, “Kids, Wait Till You Hear This”.

The dance track features the 79-year-old speaking, not singing, the lyrics over a techno beat. The project is a collaboration with the AI-voice cloning company ElevenLabs, which boasts Matthew McConaughey as an early investor, the Cabaret star says.

Minnelli and her sister, Lorna Luft, also approved the use of their mother Judy Garland’s voice by ElevenLabs.

In a Facebook post, the Arrested Development alum debunked earlier reports that her voice was AI generated or was being used by the company in any way that was illegal or that stripped her of her creative rights.

“On this dance track, “Kids, Wait Till You Hear This”, which is a tease for my book, we used AI arrangements,” she explained. “NOT AI vocals. A few trolls didn’t bother to read the truth, check with me or my partners!”

She then encouraged fans to “go listen, enjoy, and shake your pretty buns to the music, as we glide down the runway to send my book into the world and your very own hot hands.”

Minnelli’s single is one of the 13 tracks on ElevenLabs’ The Eleven Album, which also features Simon & Garfunkel’s Art Garfunkel and singer-pianist Michael Feinstein.

“What interested me here was the idea of using my voice and new tools in service of expression, not instead of it,” the New York, New York star said in a statement to NBC News. “This project respects the artist’s voice, the artist’s choices and the artist’s ownership.”

But insiders worry the Liza With a Z star is being steered into projects that don’t do justice to her legacy.

“This is so far beneath her,” a source tells Straight Shuter. “It barely even sounds like Liza.”

Friends worry Minnelli’s AI music isn’t about artistic experimentation but about monetizing her legacy in ways that benefit others more than her while she’s still alive to rubber-stamp it.

“Who is advising her to do this?” the source wonders, according to Straight Shuter. “Because it’s clearly not people who are protecting her legacy.”
