President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani appeared to put their political differences aside during their latest face-to-face meeting.

Expert lip reader Jeremy Freeman analyzed the most recent exchange between Trump, 80, and Mamdani, 34, during their Monday, September 21 meeting at Gracie Mansion, the New York Post reported on September 22.

According to Freeman, Trump said: “I’ll look after you, you look after the New Yorkers,” and “We can both make it work. I wanna support you, help me. Come with me to the White House – see how I work.”

According to the outlet, the meeting lasted about 90 minutes and included discussions about immigration and Mamdani’s plans for the Sunnyside Yards housing project in Queens. The mayor is seeking federal assistance for the development.

Per the outlet, Freeman also interpreted Trump as telling the mayor, “What I will say, we’ll look after you, but as I say, you’re doing great.”

Mamdani later characterized his conversation with the Apprentice alum in positive terms while addressing reporters. “We appreciate the president’s commitment to the city,” Mamdani said, the outlet reported. “And today, you know, the president shared many of his memories of having been to Gracie Mansion before, having been out here, as well on the lawn.”

The mayor added, “And we appreciated the conversation of how we can work together to deliver a lower cost of living for New Yorkers.”

Trump also publicly offered encouraging words to Mamdani following the meeting.

“So, hopefully you’re going to be a great one,” the president said, per the New York Post. “I’ll be able to say you’re going to be a great one, and you’re off to a good start.”

The two politicians have sharply disagreed on numerous issues, including immigration, despite their recent meetings.

As Globe previously reported, Mamdani announced on September 14 that New York City was leading a coalition of cities and counties in a federal lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s new public-charge rule.

At a press conference, posted on YouTube, Mamdani said the new rule “expand[s] the list of public benefits that might count against green card or visa applicants.” Separately, in a statement shared on the nyc.gov website, the city said it was “proud to lead a coalition of cities and counties… standing firmly against this cruel and unlawful rule.”

“The new public charge rule seeks to push immigrant families away from the programs that have kept people fed and healthy for decades,” Mamdani said at the press conference.
