A horse in Colorado was rescued after falling into a collapsed septic tank over the weekend, and is reported to be “doing well” after her ordeal.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday that a horse fell into a collapsed septic tank in Pueblo West, and was “sitting in chest-deep sewage with only her head and front hooves sticking above the ground” when rescuers arrived at the scene.

“She was wet, cold and shaking from being in the frigid liquid that was in the tank,” the sheriff’s office said.

Emergency Services personnel from the sheriff’s office responded along with Pueblo West Fire, Pueblo West Metro District, Community Animal Rescue Team (CART) and a local veterinarian.

Rescuers placed tow straps around the horse’s belly and under her front legs while the veterinarian sedated the animal. They then used a truck-mounted crane provided by Pueblo West Metro to pull the horse from the hole.

The horse was placed on the ground while she recovered from sedation, and was soon “awake, up on her feet and doing well,” the sheriff’s office said.

“Kudos to all involved in this complicated but rewarding rescue,” the sheriff’s office said.
