Domestic Destinations Dominate Americans’ 2025 Summer Travel Plans, Report Finds

As Americans begin to shake off the remnants of winter, many are eyeing familiar favorites — beaches and big cities — as their go-to destinations this summer.

According to the newly released Top Summer Travel Destinations Report from Allianz Partners USA, Seattle, Wash., and Cancun, Mexico, lead the list of popular summer getaways domestically and internationally for U.S. travelers.

The analysis, which reviewed nearly seven million travel itineraries booked between May 22 and September 2, 2024, for trips lasting between five and eight day, shows a clear preference for domestic travel this season, with 71% of itineraries staying within the U.S. and 29% heading abroad.

“American travelers are starting to dethaw from a long winter and are flocking to sunny beaches across the U.S. and abroad,” says Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA. “Summer travel is often the highlight of travelers’ year with everyone excited for some well-deserved time away. No one wants an unexpected challenge to take away from that excitement — that’s why it’s critical to have travel insurance. Travel insurance takes the stress out of those unexpected moments and safeguards your trips by protecting you from covered unexpected trip cancellations, delays, medical emergencies and even lost or delayed baggage.

In the domestic rankings, Orlando, Fla.; New York, N.Y.; and Honolulu and Kahului, Hawaii, rounded out the top five spots, underscoring Hawaiis ongoing appeal as a summer paradise. Other cities filling out the U.S. top 10 include Boston, Mass.; Portland, Ore.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Los Angeles, Calif.; and Anchorage, Alaska.

For international travelers, Mexico remains a top draw. Cancun claimed the number one spot, followed by San José del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta, reflecting the countrys continued popularity. London ranked third internationally, while Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; Montego Bay, Jamaica; Calgary, Canada; Paris, France; and Dublin, Ireland also made the list.
