After a seven-year “retirement,” actor Daniel Day-Lewis is returning to the big screen because his longtime wife is sick and tired of having him hang around the house, sources say.

The three-time Oscar winner, 67, stunned the world in 2017 when he abruptly called it quits on his storied career. But now he’s slated to star in his 26-year-old son Ronan’s directorial debut, with a script they wrote together!

While it took a family project to lure the My Left Foot star out of retirement, word is that he also did it to save his 28-year marriage to his filmmaker and novelist wife, Rebecca Miller, 62.

“Daniel’s a craftsman who loves to work with his hands so he’s kept busy all these years,” reveals a family friend. “But he was also getting on Rebecca’s nerves!”

Since he quit acting, the couple has split time between home in New York and Ireland. During that time, the English actor had only been spotted in public a handful of times.

“Rebecca didn’t believe that Daniel’s reclusiveness was good for them, and she needed to get some space because he was driving her crazy!” dishes the pal.

Insiders say that Daniel and Rebecca — daughter of the late great playwright Arthur Miller — were bickering over everything from what they ate to their business affairs.

“They were so on top of each other, she was ready to explode,” spills our source. “She really believes his return to acting is not only good for his fans — but also for their marriage!”
