A 70-year-old Virginia man was rescued Sunday when his sailboat began taking on water in high winds, officials said.

The Norfolk Police Department said Harbor Patrol officers responded to a report of a vessel in distress in Willoughby Bay Sunday morning. NPD Marine Unit 3 arrived to find the sailboat was taking on water, and quickly worked to rescue the man on board.

A video shared by the police department shows a Harbor Patrol officer reaching out to help the man climb off his sailboat and onto the police boat amid choppy waves.

According to city officials, the area was under a high wind warning for much of the day Sunday as a winter storm dumped rain and snow across several states. According to police, small craft advisory conditions were in effect on Sunday.

Police said that once the man was brought to shore, he received medical aid from Norfolk Fire Rescue.
