Three children and two dogs were rescued from a storm drain system in Colorado over the weekend, and fire officials are warning parents not to let their kids go hunting for Ninja Turtles.

The Security Fire Department said personnel responded to a neighborhood in Security-Widefield to join the search for three children and two dogs “lost in the maze of the underground storm drainage system.”

After an “extensive search,” the children and dogs were found more than half a mile away from where they started. Photos shared by the fire department show the lost kids were pulled to safety through a manhole. No injuries were reported.

“Luckily everyone got out safe in this case, however here are the potential dangers associated with this activity,” the fire department said. “Getting lost underground, hypothermia, rapid weather change flooding the drainage system (drowning risk), oxygen deficiency, toxic gases (such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide) and of course critters like rattle snakes.”

Fire officials urged parents to talk to their kids about the dangers of playing in and around storm drains.

“Kids may think it would be fun to explore storm drains looking for those ninja turtles, but it can be very dangerous and even deadly,” the fire department said.
